2. Cybersecurity news you missed: Avast caught selling user's browsing data

Full article here!

Quick summary:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has mandated antivirus provider Avast to pay a $16.5 million fine for deceptive practices. Avast and its subsidiaries allegedly sold consumer web browsing data to third parties despite claiming their products protected against such tracking. The FTC asserted that Avast collected and stored user browsing data without consent, selling identifiable information to over 100 third parties through its subsidiary Jumpshot.

The company is accused of misleading users about privacy protection. The fine will be compensated to affected consumers, and Avast is barred from misrepresenting data usage, required to obtain user consent before selling data, delete transferred information, notify consumers, and implement a privacy program.

Newsletter Partner: ProtonVPN

With Avast coming under fire for their illegal selling of user data, I think it is important to mention our newsletter sponsor here.

Why?

Because they are the ONLY open-source, publicly audited VPN with strong legal protection via Swiss privacy law.

Personally I prefer their paid plans for the additional features and security, but their FREE VPN and email offerings are fantastic.

You can get the free VPN or get a deal on their paid plans using the link here:

3. Free hands on experience: Vulnerability Scanning

Interview Question of the Week!

Each week I pose a question that I have personally asked or have been asked in real interviews. Try to answer the question by speaking your response out loud! It may feel weird at first but trust me: it will level up your interview game! Practice makes perfect!

This Week's Interview Question:

"What are some cybersecurity considerations to think about when using SaaS applications?"

Next week I will write out how I would answer this question, so look out for next weeks newsletter!

Last Week's Interview Question / Answer:

Question: "Please explain SaaS in your own words."

Answer: "SaaS, or Software as a Service, lets you use software online without downloading it. Examples include Google Docs."
